what I got

My name is Alexander Smith. I'm an artist, designer and illustrator currently working in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I have chops, speed and creative juice. I love to set myself against complex problems which will require creative solutions. I'm accustomed to bringing every bit of intensity I have to every project I work on.

I grew up in an artist house; both my parents worked as storyboard artists, illustrators, colorists and designers. I've been steeped in art, design and aesthetics since birth. I spent my high school career drawing and learning web and graphics programs. After graduation I enrolled at Michigan State University, where I concentrated on drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. After graduating I immediately began work at Doner Inc. There I've worked on creating logos, event branding, print and collateral, web advertising and branding, web design and conceptual brand development.

Since then I've moved on to create brand identity, label design and other  artwork for Bell's Brewery, in my opinion the best brewery in the world. There I've had the opportunity to work as designer, art director, illustrator, and brand developer.

I'm hard working, dedicated to the quality of every project, able to work within and oversee groups, and live to find creative solutions for every problem.

colorblind

Yep. I'm colorblind. In fact, I got it bad. I'm what's diagnosed as "strong protanopia." It's the worst kind. Here's a link that goes in depth on colorblindness if you want to read.

Here's an image of a rainbow:

Thankfully, I've been fortunate enough to grow up in an age where there are many tools, numeric systems and freindly coworkers that allow me to do my job. It's not always easy, but I've been in this industry for over ten years and I've come to believe that this "disablilty" has benifited me more than it has hurt me. If you want proof, please take a look at my portfolio.

my weirdness

I get weird about certain things. My love of sandwiches is such that massive galactic bodies orbit around it. I think that lobsters are one of the more remarkable species because they live forever. I despise the mall, but love the flea market.

Here are 5 other things I like:

  1.   Dope headphones
  2.   Kittens
  3.   Aged meats and cheeses
  4.   Dinosaurs
  5.  Just palling around... you know. Just kickin it.

The preservation of The Great Lakes, the availablity of pho, and the continued survival of the Slender Loris will always be important to me. I'm really good at the original N64 Super Smash Bros.

I'm not too sure about everybody else, but I know I like you.

Let's talk.

Why don't we go ahead and start a conversation.
